Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tool decide a page is blank?

Each page is rendered at reduced size and the tool counts pixels that are noticeably darker than white. If that share is below the limit set by the sensitivity slider, the page is flagged, so pages with faint scanner noise can still count as blank.

What does the sensitivity slider actually change?

It sets how much ink a page may contain and still count as blank. At 100% only pages with under 0.1% non-white pixels are flagged, at 0% pages with up to 5% are, and the default 80% sits at about 1%.

It missed pages that look blank, or flagged pages I want to keep. What now?

Lower the sensitivity if pages that look empty were missed, and raise it if pages with a light header, footer, or watermark were flagged. Then click Detect Blank Pages again and check the thumbnails.

Can I review the pages before they're removed?

After detection the tool shows a thumbnail of every flagged page, and clicking a thumbnail deselects it so it stays in the document. Only the pages that remain selected are removed when you confirm.

Will a page with only a page number be treated as blank?

A lone page number covers well under 0.1% of the page, so even the strictest setting can flag it as blank. That's why the thumbnail review matters when such pages need to stay.

Are the remaining pages changed in any way?

The kept pages are copied over exactly, with their content, fonts, and order untouched. Bookmarks aren't carried into the new file, since the pages are assembled into a fresh PDF, so rebuild them with Edit Bookmarks if you need them.

Why does detection take a while on long documents?

Every page has to be rendered to pixels before it can be measured, so the time grows with page count and page complexity. Progress is shown while it works, and nothing else is needed from you until the thumbnails appear.

Does the PDF leave my computer for the scan?

No. Pages are rendered and analyzed in your browser, and the cleaned PDF is written locally. That's also why the scan speed depends on your own device rather than a server.
